===Matt Talks===

===Why are we here? What is this "Node" thing we're doing?===

===Membership status (Adam)===

27 members. Like 15 new ones.

===Financial status (Kelly)===

Eh. The new space, which is awesome, is more expensive. Utilities are high
enough that we're on the road to bankruptcy. BUT, wepay is bringing in dues more
timely.

Right now we're paying about 1400 a month and bringing in about 1300 a month.

===Say hello to the vice-president (Mark)===

Feel pretty good about things. Kinda nice to have people out.

===Goals from last year===

* More community outreach

We ran more workshops. Hackathon and Betascape are getting the name out. People
think we're awesome.

* Node Awesome Grants

Hmm. We don't really have extra money.

* OpenHacks are working awesome

Bringing people in is a good idea. Node knock is great.

* More space organization

Hmm. We moved and got lots of new space, so lets fill it up first before we get
too bent out of shape.

* More events

I [Matt] think we hit that. Workshops were awesome. Classes and stuff went well.

* More publicity

Totally hit that. Was a good year.

* Framework for maintaining inventory of parts.

F that noise.

* Build a board of advisors.

Matt was gonna do it, he didn't though. We should still pursue that. 1) who can
help the org grow 2) who can help us take the organization forward.

Suggestions: guy who started creative alliance, other people who work with
creative groups. Outgoing members would be good candidates for advisory board
because they can say wise things.

===Officer elections===

* PRESIDENT

Mark is nominated and is PRESIDENT!

* VICE-PRESIDENT

Todd is nominated and is VICE-PRESIDENT!

* TREASURER

John is nominated and is TREASURER!

* SECRETARY

James is nominated and is SECRETARY!

===Review the collection of dues===

(amount, payment period, due date and acceptable methods for)

''Something about tasing robots or robots that tase''

We like WePay. It should probably be required. If you deal on a strict cash-only
basis, it makes us uncomfortable.

For future membership purposes, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE signing up for WePay.

===Review the time, location, and frequency of regular meetings===

Before OpenHack? 7 to 7:30. 30 minutes and pick up non-members / members who
come in early. ALSO, meetings should be twice a month.

STARTING MARCH 10, MEETINGS WILL BE EVERY OTHER THURSDAY! SEVEN P.M. FOR THE
REST OF TIME UNTIL CHANGE! PERIOD! THANK YOU!

- the PRESIDENT

===Review standing rules and policies===

(Dues policy, key policy, membership process, quorum)

Dues policy: WePay, get it in. Seriously. If you've got an issue, talk to
someone. Two months, we'll start trying to get your key. Three months, you have
to be voted back in.

Key policy: A member lost a key. Another member thought they lost a key. $100
for lost key. Do we want to change that? YES. Yeah, here's the deal. $25 to
replace the key, you have to tell Sherwin, and you have to go to the locksmith.
Cool.

Membership Process: Getting documents to members is important. Voting on members
is kinda weird and crazy if not enough members are present.

Quorum: 1/3 is too much. **TODO: MARK, SEND A PETITION TO LOWER QUORUM TO 7
MEMBERS. IN THE CASE OF LESS-THAN-QUORUM FOR NEW MEMBER ADDITIONS, VOTE GOES
ONLINE. AND THEN ALSO A STIPULATION THAT ONLINE VOTING IS AN APPROVED METHOD OF
VOTING WHEN NEEDED (AND ONLINE VOTES TAKE LONGER: THE KELLY EGAN AMENDMENT).**
We want to reduce the need for online voting.

===Set goals for the organization for the coming year===

* 501c3 by April 1, 2011. LET'S DO THIS!

* ENCOURAGE MORE WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS!

* Let's make this space, fuckin, rock. Take a day and get stuff set up. Improve appearance of the space so that stuff can happen here. TODO (MARK): MARCH 19 WILL BE A CLEANUP, IMPROVEMENT, AND ORGANIZATION DAY starting with floorspace, member shelves, and tool area.

* Improve accessibility: Make it easier to get into the space. (ADAM IS ON THIS)

* Get more organizations in here. (like RefreshBaltimore or a trivia night)

* Run a big event.

* More cool projects on display.

* More collaboration with other groups. (like Effervescent Collective)

* Revist the goals first meeting of the month. Analytics BITCHES.

===Additional Motions from members present===

* Just take care of your shit.

===Notes===

I'm not secretary anymore, so this has a lot more swears. Fuck it bitches.

Cool.

Membership Process: Getting documents to members is important. Voting on members

27 members. Like 15 new ones.

## Financial status (Kelly)

Eh. The new space, which is awesome, is more expensive. Utilities are high
enough that we're on the road to bankruptcy. BUT, wepay is bringing in dues more
timely.

Right now we're paying about 1400 a month and bringing in about 1300 a month.

## Say hello to the vice-president (Mark)

Feel pretty good about things. Kinda nice to have people out.

## Goals from last year

* More community outreach

We ran more workshops. Hackathon and Betascape are getting the name out. People
think we're awesome.

* Node Awesome Grants

Hmm. We don't really have extra money.

* OpenHacks are working awesome

Bringing people in is a good idea. Node knock is great.

* More space organization

Hmm. We moved and got lots of new space, so lets fill it up first before we get
too bent out of shape.

* More events

I [Matt] think we hit that. Workshops were awesome. Classes and stuff went well.

* More publicity

Totally hit that. Was a good year.

* Framework for maintaining inventory of parts.

F that noise.

* Build a board of advisors.

Matt was gonna do it, he didn't though. We should still pursue that. 1) who can
help the org grow? 2) who can help us take the organization forward.

Suggestions: guy who started creative alliance, other people who work with
creative groups. Outgoing members would be good candidates for advisory board
because they can say wise things.

## Officer elections

* PRESIDENT

Mark is nominated and is PRESIDENT!

* VICE-PRESIDENT

Todd is nominated and is VICE-PRESIDENT!

* TREASURER

John is nominated and is TREASURER!

* SECRETARY

James is nominated and is SECRETARY!

## Review the collection of dues

AGENDA: 2011-02-08

- Members Update
- New Members?
- Jason Denny (voted in on the list)
- Heather Sarkassian

- Todd ousted Marty as Mayor (foursquare)

- Financial Update
- We have money, but the last two months were the hardest we've had yet. 1300 and 1400 for our first two months. We don't have enough members to cover that level for the whole year.
- Sherwin is currently reviewing the utilities cost calculation spreadsheet. It's not clear how much we're using, but it's probably a good bit. We might want a clamp-on ammeter (Wes) to measure how much power we're using. Electricity for the building in Jan was $850, oil was $4500.
- NOTE: three separate former residents have commented that the third floor is "unusable" during summer days. The roof fan on the third floor must be fixed.
- We should totally get 501c3, collect a chunk of change and find a more appropriate space.
- We'll revisit membership dues and "the extra fees problem".
- [ACTION ITEM: Matt] We're going to mail Jimmy Rogers a check for the same amount we get out of Eventbrite.
- For the annual meeting, "Where do we want the space to go? How much do we want to grow? What do we want to be in Baltimore?"
- [ACTION ITEM: James] 501c3 paperwork

- Upcoming Events
- Techno Swapfest: No one seems really psyched to lead this.
- Betascape: Saturday May 7, one day, would be cool if we could run workshops and demos in the space. The event will be on North Ave in front of the Windup Space. Could we run the space as a gallery & classroom? HEY MEMBERS: think about a workshop you could run or might like to run. Deadline for running a workshop will be mid-March if you want to
- BohConf: a free unconference May 16 - 19, Baltimore Convention Center, Ruby on Rails focused, free tshirts with the natty boh guy.
- Civic Data Hackathon: Sat, Feb 12 at Beehive http://civichackday.eventbrite.com/
- ???
- Beer tasting? Indeed. Supposedly, not having a projector was holding that back. Solved that problem, obviously.

- Special Agenda Items
- Housecleaning/keeping, Thursday nights should end with "Last Call" so that people know that it's time to clean up their crap.
- Keys (RFID on the door?)
- Annual Meeting: Tuesday, February 22. If you want to be involved as an officer, think about that in advance. Also, if you've got something you want to discuss, like vision or goals or new initiatives or something, write it down and bring it along.
- Makerbot, workin'? Done, needs some calibration.
- Kitchenette!? Talk more at the annual meeting.
- If we can get a full size fridge, kegerator is make rocket go time.
- MAME cabinet is pretty much done. Just needs tweaks, Mark is handling that.
- Mark knows a dancer (Lily) who's interested in getting hooked up with the Node for making awesome things related to dance.
- Wes is working with the HOPE conference attendee metadata project and is interested in redesigning the project, he works mostly with hardware. Would start in the summer. Goal is a new tracking system for the HOPE conference. http://amd.hope.net/ http://www.openbeacon.org/
- DIY Bio dude will be around on Thursday to chat.
- Jason is interested in doing something on the wall to make the whiteboard situation better or just something cool on the wall.

- Attendance
- Wes
- Matt
- Kelly
- James
- Mark
- Todd
- Jason
- John
- Adam

== Agenda Items ==

* CreateBaltimore - we'd like to talk about what we're doing at the Node. "We Built a Community Space." Matt is going to run an open house at the Node after the event.
* Organizing the space - We don't have enough electricity, it seems like. First, we should build shelves and get some pegboard. John will decide what we need to do to build shelving. We voted and approved $100 for building more shelving.
* A potluck hosted at the Node for members of the Load of Fun? Someone will have to own it.
* Sink? Ben wasn't here to advocate.
* Steve stopped by, he's an electrician.
* The New Year's party went well. Like 15 people stopped by. We oughta have more parties.
* I [Adam] ate at Nak Won Korean BBQ over a block north of North off of Charles, it was awesome.
== Required features of Load of Fun lock system ==

* Cooperation with Sherwin and the rest of the tenants
* Should be extremely reliable. QA / field testing should be fun.
* Should be extremely simple, require no skills (programming, unix, etc.) to change settings, add or remove access.
* Should cheap enough to replace all artists keys or work with the current lock system
* Should have an option to buzz people in for visitors
* Will be internal requiring access to two doors

== Solutions ==

=== No Networking ===
* Each door has its own microcontroller and reader, stores its own access list ( SD card? )
* Buzz in system connects directly to lock and uses simple two conductor wire and a button.
* This system limits failure to one door at a time, is very modular.

=== Wireless Networking ===

* Jeenodes
** Do they have enough range?
*** Read that Jeenodes at 100m line of site or 30m indoors. Lower baud-rates improve range.
** What would the power situation be like?
*** Power off of wall-wart, possibly with battery recharge for power-outage.
** What are the failure modes?
*** '''internet out''' - local activation via keypad/usb key/retina scan
*** '''power out''' (internet also out) - battery backup kicks in for a few hours, use local activation
*** it seems like you'd want to always leave the door openable by key for the best failure protection.
**** electronic strikes work by unlocking the part that keeps the door in the frame. The bolt going from the door is always unlockable by key.

=== Wired Networking ===

* Ethernet shield and web server
** One wire between door and router, second wire between router and server, and always on door server. As few "moving" parts as necessary.
** would require people to be on the loadoffun wireless to buzz people in
** could store access keys locally incase server melts down
* No ethernet alternative: signal boards via simple copper wire from central web server.
** '''plus:''' no ethernet shield cost.
** node server (running dyn-dns or similar) authenticates users and then sends command over serial to a usb-attached arduino/similar peripheral. peripheral sets signal lines high for corresponding node devices. Node devices open door locks.
** node server could run fancy program (auth via tropo sms, email, web app), also just as feasible with wireless networking

=== Third Party / Complete Solutions ===

What are the money and time costs of using a pre-packaged solution?

== Door Hardware ==

Generally, it seems like a good idea to keep normal door operation the same once the unlocking system installed. Doors have been slowly engineered over the years and work very well in the case of crowds, fires, etc. Electric strike works well for this, additional actuation also as long as it doesn't '''require''' that it be used to get in our out.

Electric Strike: [[File:Electric_strike.jpg]]

* Electric door strike
** we have one but from our tests it will not work on the outside door. Great for door to studio. (how electric strike operates: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7lCiQ6IP4I)
* Electromagnetic lock
** requires a battery backup incase power goes out
** requires a button to be pressed to exit (This could be a motion sensor, with the button just as a backup)
*** ''motion sensors are too easy to fool with changes in light / shade which would be major problem in the gallery space'' - [[User:Abachman|Abachman]]

* Servo/other-motor actuated
** for bar-style door (http://shrten.com/424), a servo motor would keep the door function the same but allow you to trigger opening from outside. servo force would need to be pretty decent to push the bar in. $75-$110 would buy a hefty enough servo (http://www.servocity.com/html/hsr-5498sg_servo.html). there's also a potential for very clever solution possibly involving a counter weight, some gearing, etc.

== The Key ==
* SMS/Tropo
* Mobile Website
* Keypad -- doesn't have to look like an atm keypad. could be a rotary dial (http://www.porticus.org/bell/images/buttset/dial.jpg) or a set of crazy '''lost''' style knobs/switches. ideally they'd be self returning/position-less though so that once the door was opened, the code to open it couldn't be discerned.

** node server (running dyn-dns or similar) authenticates users and then sends command over serial to a usb-attached arduino/similar peripheral. peripheral sets signal lines high for corresponding node devices. Node devices open door locks.
** node server could run fancy program (auth via tropo sms, email, web app), also just as feasible with wireless networking

=== Third Party / Complete Solutions ===

What are the money and time costs of using a pre-packaged solution?

== Door Hardware ==

* Electric door strike
** we have one but from our tests it will not work on the outside door. Great for door to studio. (how electric strike operates: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7lCiQ6IP4I)
* Electromagnetic lock
** requires a battery backup incase power goes out
** requires a button to be pressed to exit (This could be a motion sensor, with the button just as a backup)
* Servo/other-motor actuated

== The Key ==
* SMS/Tropo
* Mobile Website

** Saturday, Sept 18, 1:30 PM - 8:45 PM EDT, National Electronics Museum 1745 West Nursery Road, Linthicum, MD 21090
** Advertise, notify membership
* Getting a faster internet connection? Does we need 'em?
** Matt: I think we need it.
** Adam: I don't think we need to spend more money on it.
** Members have noticed at events.
** We're currently spending $30 a month.
** Who would we get it from? Wireless seems like the best option.
** We might be able to bump Clear up.
** Local file server might be handy.
* Cleaning up
** recycling: Alan said he'd take it tonight.
** We have too much and it's not organized.
* Add space per Sherwin?
** As long as it's not just to hold more junk.
** Do we need it?
** Matt: yeah. At a busy workshop, we run out of space at about 10 people.
** Events could be better advertised, we could reach out to other groups.
** Clutter and disorganization makes discussion difficult.
** What do we want to have and what do we want to do?
*** Meetings + Workshop. These scenarios do not seem to be compatible in the current space.
** It is impossible to have 30 people.
** Ben: Do we want a new space, or would it make more sense to rent a space as needed? Like, find a space that has room for people and use it when we need it.
** Matt: we can have events in our space which is good, because that's the reason for having space: to put people in the space.
** Kelly: could we organize to make room for more people?
** Consensus: unlikely
** Adam: "Build it and they may come." It was the same when we started the space.

* Megapolis (jon?) : Friday night through Sunday night, this week. Workshops in the node sat & sun. The space will be open all the time, members can come and hang out, but paid guests will have equipment priority. There will be an open house.

Workshops: 1030AM - 200PM on Sat, we're leading two.

OPEN HOUSE: gala in the LoF gallery, 4:30 - 5:30 PM. This will be the time to come and show your crazy Node face, 'cause the workshop will be open and we can stand around and be awesome. No charge.

* Parts store order: Approve an amount, then order? OR list, then approve? Who is a parts expert? What do we already have? We're less concerned with little parts, 'cause those are cheap. Much consideration should be devoted to the big ticket items. People seem to like the idea of "everything under $0.25, don't worry about it". Everything else needs to be paid for. A Google doc shall be forthcoming. KELLY WILL DO THIS. (ACTION ITEM)
* Taxes (jon?) - challenging. We have to figure out what we actually have and list it on a piece of paper. Then we write numbers next to the things on the list, then we give the list to the government, and then they give us other numbers. Jon is still working on taxes, it's pretty much his bag, 'cause he's the treasurer. Nick Farr suggests we file a 990, even though we're not a 501c3. This would be a good faith measure. Bang it out, yo. If we are intending to get 501c3, we should do it before 27 months after date of incorporation. The chances of us existing after that amount of time is slim, so out of sight, out of mind, amirite?
* Ipad meetup. Bring your ipad and your huge bags of money.
* Vote to approve Colin Freas as a member
** Paintball performance was solidly adequate.
* Approve money t o buy more keys. Like $60 or so. Four keys worth. APPROVED.
* BETASCAPE - drag racing will be happening, we're pretty sure. Planning meetings? Sign up on lists? I dunno, whatever.

Report from the treasurer.

* Jon says we have ~$2500 in the bank.
* We're going to get an extension on taxes.
* Jon is going to seek help from Nick Farr.

Report from the secretary.

* One dude filled out the form.
* 20 members, no one new to vote on.

== Special Agenda Items ==
* Renting situation
** 2nd floor, back of the building
** We'd like to stay here.
** Matt will keep trying to get a hold of Sherwin. (ACTION)
** Mark is willing to look for space casually, we're not going to do a hard
core space hunt. (ACTION)

* Metal Lathe (do we want it?)
** Do we have room for it? It's big, but not huge. Very heavy.
** What would we do with it? Don't know, Jon will figure it out.
** Jon is in touch with the donor, it's at donor's parents' house. Emil wants
to meet some folks first. (ACTION)

* RobotFest plan of action
** When do we need to be there?
** Bring out projects: electronics kit? NOPE, just the rocket stuff. Need to print a
stencil, cut a tube for a template (size of launcher), a model clinometer should be
manufactured. Tape measure
** Mark is going to contact Estes to see if they'd donate a prize for the
winning rocket. (ACTION)
** We need a wiki page with a schedule for sitting at the table. Hour by hour,
making sure the table is occupied. Matt will make the wiki page. (ACTION)
** Jon is going to bring a whiteboard or something to do a leaderboard. (ACTION)

* T-Shirts
** Mark's friend can make them and sell them to us, 0 - 100 is $6 apiece.
** 25 to start would be $7.35, the next 50 would be $5.50 apiece (two color).
** Do we want cheap T-shirts, or awesome T-shirts?
** Mark is going to survey the community to see if anyone is interested. (ACTION)

* Merchandising in general?
** Matt would rather sell Obama circuit boards than t-shirts.

* Organizational purchase. Parts store? Get organized.
** We need stuff and we need somewhere to put stuff.
** Bucket of Legos. Be awesome, use it and put it back. If you're going to
incorporate it into a project, put in some dollars.
** No matter what we do, before we order, we'll have to have a plan for
getting that thing organized.
** Mark suggests we vote to dedicate $60 to $80 (up to $1000) to setting up the
parts store. Jon suggested we can vote to spend online, but first we need a
plan. Mark can start the planning for the parts store, we can start an email
thread and a wiki page. Alan suggested Harbor Freight. (ACTION)

== Upcoming Events ==
* Defcon
** Kyle H. is organizing a local Defcon group and seeking folks from Charm Sec,
Dojo Sec, 2600, etc. It seems like there's a desire to learn, but there's isn't
a lot of connection and organization between orgs.
** His personal goal is monthly presentation and social event.
** Mark can host for any events.

* Synth Space Jam Party 4/16
** Fridge is stocked. Justin is going to lead the thing.

* RobotFest/MMF 4/24
** Awesome. See above.

* Artscape/Betascape 7/16-7/18
** We're going to bring the DIY, fo' shizzle.
** Matt can set up the wiki page to track which spaces have been contacted will reach out. (ACTION)
** Egg drop?
** Mark will bring the green laser and we can set up the Graffiti Writer again.
** They're open for whatever.
** Power tool drag racing? $1000 if we can get sponsorship.
** BRING IT, DO IT, BAM!

* Megalopolis Audio Festival, 5/14-5/16
** Five workshops happening in the space (and we don't have to do jack).
** Jon will be organizing our proposal and is in contact with the organizers.
** Jon will make a wiki page to organize managing the space during the event. (ACTION)

* Collab, wtf?
** Justin can't support it, so will someone else.
** Matt's question is, is anyone interested in running it? Sounds like no one
is interested in doing it, so that's that.

== Standard Agenda Items ==
* Financial
* Membership
* We-will-research-an-awesome-domain-name-for-a-power-tool-drag-racing-website.com
* Mark and Matt will get in contact with Robert Wray of the GRL/BmoreFiber project (defunct)
* Jon will setup dues subscriptions. (spoiler: Adam did legwork, Jon hasn't finished it)
